Why is Washing Your Doona Important?

Washing your doona is crucial for several reasons, such as improved sleep quality, better overall health, and increased lifespan of the doona. By maintaining a clean doona, you also save money in the long run by avoiding frequent replacements.

To help prolong the life of your doona and for hygiene reasons, we always recommend using a doona cover. Every Bonny doona is a standard Australian size and will fit into all same sized Aussie doona covers. Check out our size guide for more information on doona sizes.

What are the care instructions for Bonny?

Your Bonny Doona is pretty low maintenance. It mostly wants to hug you and be hugged back.

For minor spills, a simple spot clean will suffice. For bigger stains, Machine Wash cold with mild detergent, and include an extra rinse cycle. Finally, Tumble Dry low until thoroughly dry. Do not dry clean.

If your doona does not move in the washer or dryer, professionally launder.

How Often Should You Wash Your Doona?

Assuming you use a doona cover and regularly wash your sheets, as a general rule, you should avoid washing your down doonas too often and only do it 1 - 2 times every year.

Washing a down doona too often can strip the down of its natural oils and fats. This will lead to the down becoming brittle and fragile. For this reason, for little spills try to spot clean with a damp cloth.

How to Prepare Your Doona for Washing.

Before washing your doona, check for any damages such as tears or rips. Although this is rare, it worth a quick look and repairing the tear prior to washing.

Also, consider using a stain remover for stains on the outer casing. Do not use any harsh chemicals as this can damage the down.

Can You Put a Doona in a Washing Machine?

Yes, you can put a doona in a washing machine, provided it fits comfortably and allows for movement. For down doonas such as Bonny's All Rounder, this is always preferable to dry cleaning. Dry cleaning can damage the down due to the harsh chemicals used.

The washing method is largely the same regardless of if you have a top-loading or front-loading machine. We have broken it down below to make it extra easy for you.

How to use a top loading washing machine?

To wash your doona in a top-loading machine, follow these steps:

  1. Place the doona in the drum, ensuring it has enough space to move.
  2. Add a mild detergent and set the machine to a cold water cycle.
  3. Use a gentle or delicate cycle to minimize agitation.
  4. Add an extra rinse cycle to ensure all detergent is removed.

Can You Wash a Doona in a Front Loader?

Yes, you can wash a doona in a front-loading machine. Follow these steps:

  1. Place the doona in the drum, allowing for adequate space.
  2. Add a mild detergent and set the machine to a cold water cycle.
  3. Use a gentle or delicate cycle to protect the doona.
  4. Add an extra rinse cycle to remove all detergent residue.

How to Dry a Doona?

We always recommending drying a down doona like a Bonny Winter using a tumble dryer. It is critical for the down to be properly dry and the movement also helps the down dry evenly.

Tumble Drying Your Doona.

When tumble drying your doona, it is essential to that the doona is dried fully and evenly. Follow these steps:

  1. Place the doona in the tumble dryer, ensuring it has enough room to move. For many larger doonas, you will likely need to visit a coin laundromat or use a commercial sized dryer.
  2. Set the dryer to a low heat setting to prevent damage.
  3. Use a gentle cycle to minimize agitation.
  4. Check the doona periodically to ensure it is drying evenly. You can even add tennis or dryer balls to help it dry evenly and fluff up the down.

It will take some time for the doona to fully dry.

Can you line dry your doona?

We never recommend line drying a down doona as it will lead to the down clumping. It will massively affect the thermal performance and comfort of your down doona. Always use a tumble dryer.

How to store your doona?

Generally, you only need to store a doona if you change your doonas with the seasons. Those that do this know just how brilliant is to sleep with a super light and airy doona in summer and something ultra cosy in winter. This is the reason we created the Summer + Winter bundle.

With Bonny, we make storage easy. We include a canvas bag with all our doonas. This ensures that it is kept dust free and compact so it doesn't take up too much space in your cupboard.

With Bonny, you can shop Australia's favourite doonas, quilts and duvets.
