Down is a renowned material. But as an animal product, it requires careful care and handling.
We have teamed up with the world's leading down supplier to bring you not only the highest quality product but one that is ethical and sustainable too. We believe it's never too late to demand better standards for our industry and create change from the top... well, down.
Ethically sourced, responsibly made.
Simply put: the cosiest, fluffiest doonas on the market come with peace of mind, too.
No live plucking. No force feeding.
Unfortunately, two abhorrent practices remain endemic in our industry: live plucking and force-feeding. Force-feeding, particularly common in European down (especially duck down), is used for foie gras production. For this reason, we do not use European duck down.
Thanks to our RDS certification, we ensure that Bonny’s down never involves live plucking or force-feeding. Instead, it is responsibly sourced as a byproduct of the poultry industry and would have otherwise gone to waste.
In addition to our RDS certification, we’re proud to say our supplier helped establish this standard with The North Face and The Control Union. This means it’s not just us pushing the industry to better places, but our supplier too.
Tested 'til we're spotless: every single time.
We put our doonas through rigorous testing. If our doona hits your doorstep, the down is clean, hypoallergenic and durable.
There are no regulations around how down is processed. This leads to two problems:
1
Down is not cleaned properly.
This can result in people believing they have a down allergy when they’re likely just reacting to the unclean down. Achoo! It’s dust.
2
Down is cleaned cheaply and with harsh chemical.
Not only is this bad on the planet, but this process strips the down of its natural oils, achieving ‘cleanliness’ but making it brittle and reducing durability.
We achieve our spotless standards through two scientifically-proven methods: the Turbidity Test and the Oxygen Test. Let’s break it down.
Oxygen Test
1.6mg/100g
3x better than the hypoallergenic threshold.Turbidity Test
1000mm
Best possible result1. Turbidity Test
The Turbidity Test checks for dirt and dust on the down.
The down is agitated in water and the water from this agitation is placed in a long 1000 ml tube with crosshairs visible on the very bottom. The point at which you can not see the crosshairs any longer is the value. In a nutshell: If the crosshairs are clear, the down is clean.
How do we measure up, you ask? We double the necessary standard, scoring a hypoallergenic-loving 1000 ml. In fact, this is where the testing stops. This gives Bonny the best possible score — and makes our down completely hypoallergenic for sensitive (see: sniffly) sleepers.
2. Oxygen Test
Think of the Oxygen Test as a ‘purity check’.
Using the down from the turbidity test we then add drops of potassium permanganate. This substance breaks down all the organic matter. When there's no more organic matter, the solution turns pink representing that the down is now clean. The fewer the drops of the potassium permanganate used, the cleaner the down.
Most countries require a rating below 10 to consider the down clean; and in the USA, a product must have an Oxygen Number of 4.8 or less to be labelled hypoallergenic. We don’t think that’s good enough.
Our score? An unmatched 1.6. That’s just one drop of the solution and the best score possible. What a breath of fresh air.
The scoop on our washing process.
We use a cleaning solution that’s gentle on our doonas — and the planet.
You wouldn’t wash your hair with dish soap, right? The same goes for down. Following our rigorous testing, we use a cleaning solution that’s gentle on our doonas — and the planet. This commitment to quality is why we partner with bluesign®. Thanks to their unique formula, our doonas maintain the ideal balance of fat and oil — preserving the fluffiness and warmth of your down. What’s more, their oversight ensures responsible manufacturing practices, guaranteeing that products bearing the bluesign® label meet the highest sustainability standards.
