Too hot? Tossing around like a rotisserie chicken? Maybe you woke up feeling weirdly tired, even though you got your full eight hours. Sometimes it’s not stress or screens. Sometimes it’s your bedding.
It’s worth asking, is your bed helping or hurting your sleep?
We don’t just like sleep for fun, our body actually needs it to sleep properly. Good sleep helps everything from memory and mood to immune function and skin health. And the quality of your sleep is shaped by more than just your mattress.
The bedding around you makes a big difference too. It’s the thing your body’s touching for hours at a time, every single night. So if it’s not working for you, you’ll feel it. Here's how your setup might be messing with your rest.
Temperature Regulation
If you’re waking up sweaty or kicking off your doona in the middle of the night, you’re not alone. Overheating is one of the most common sleep disruptors and a lot of it comes down to what your bedding is made from.
Natural fabrics like cotton, bamboo, and linen breathe better than synthetics. They wick moisture, let heat escape, and help regulate your temperature through the night. Bamboo is especially good if you run hot thanks to its moisture-wicking properties. Linen is light, airy, and gets softer with every wash. Cotton is a classic and winner for a reason. It’s cool, durable, and super comfy.
The type of fill in your doona matters too. Down offers high warmth and cosiness while being breathable. Wool naturally adjusts to your body temperature. Cotton is light too.
Allergies and Skin Sensitivity
If you wake up stuffy or your skin’s irritated, your bedding could be the culprit. Hypoallergenic materials help. Bonny doonas are designed to be gentle on skin and resistant to dust mites, which can make a big difference if you’re sensitive. Clean bedding = cleaner breathing.
Pressure Relief and Support
Pillows and toppers matter more than people think. If your neck’s sore or you’re waking up stiff, it might be time to rethink what you’re sleeping on. Side sleepers usually need more loft. Stomach sleepers need less. A topper can balance out a too-firm or too-soft mattress so you’re not tossing all night.
It's important to make sure you're being supported by your bed, to reduce back and neck pain.
Bedding Quality.

Thread Count and Fabric Type
There’s a weird myth going around that the higher the thread count, the better the sheets.
Once you go past a certain point, high thread counts can actually mean thinner, more fragile threads packed too tightly, which doesn’t always feel great. Somewhere between 200 and 400 is usually the sweet spot.
What really matters is the fabric itself. Natural fibres like cotton, linen and bamboo are soft, breathable and better at regulating temperature than synthetic blends. If you’re picky about texture or have sensitive skin, it’s worth checking the label for certifications.
GOTS is a big one. It stands for Global Organic Textile Standard and means the fabric was made without toxic chemicals, from field to factory. If something’s GOTS certified, it’s been through some serious testing. OEKO-TEX is another one to look for. It checks for harmful substances in the final product so you’re not snuggling up in anything sketchy.
